Say the model rates a match at 75% for a goal before half-time. Twenty minutes in, it's still 0-0. What now?
The clock is working against you
Goals arrive at a fairly steady rate through a half. If 20 of the 45 minutes have gone without one, a big slice of the chance has gone with them. When we checked thousands of matches in our own data, games that were rated strongly before kick-off but stood at 0-0 after 20 minutes went on to produce a first-half goal only about half the time. The strong pre-match number had turned into a coin flip.
So why bet at all?
Because "0-0 at 20 minutes" covers very different games. One is a cagey stand-off with no shots. Another has had six shots, two on target and four corners, and the home side is camped in the opposition half. The scoreboard says the same thing; the game doesn't.
What turns a 0-0 into a Live Hot Pick
- A strong start point — the match must have been rated highly before kick-off.
- At least one shot on target — the goalkeeper has actually been tested.
- Real action — enough shots, or shots and corners combined, for the minute we're in.
- Pressure above normal — shots, shots on target and corners compared with what a typical game has produced at that point.
- Still time on the clock — the window runs from 20 minutes into the mid-30s.
Only when all of these line up does a match appear as a hot pick on the Live page — with a cha-ching when the goal goes in.
The price matters too
Live odds on a first-half goal drift up as the clock runs. That's the trade-off: the longer you wait for proof, the better the price but the less time is left. Many members set their own minimum price and only get in when the market reaches it.
